Caremark ask: Is franchising right for you?

It should come as no surprise that buying a franchise involves facing a series of decisions: What sector are you interested in? Which franchise are you going to choose within that sector? Which bank will you approach for lending? The list is sizeable. But before all that, deciding whether franchising is right for you will be your top priority. The idea of buying into an established brand and methodology may be attractive, but are you the right type of person for the role?

At Caremark we have over 65 UK franchisees managing 74 offices, each originating from a unique professional background. Whether they have a history in the care sector or were previously from a different industry entirely, what matters most is their approach to the franchise model. It is important you remember that you are buying into a system, a system written and developed by the franchisor that has rules to be followed. These are not in place to limit your business, they are to give you the best chance of success.

The ideal franchisee will understand that a franchisor has invested years and money in developing their system and proving their model, they have taken the entrepreneurial risk of starting and developing their brand. Buying into a franchise allows you to skip this process, beginning your business armed with a set of tools to help you start the right way.

If your career has been one of following procedure and guidelines to achieve a common goal and now have a desire to build something of your own, franchising is an exciting arena for you to investigate. However, if you have a tendency to be a rule breaker and like to do things your own way, a franchise may not be for you.

Franchising is for those that believe the system will help them avoid mistakes but want to be business owner. In saying that, a franchise does not guarantee success. The things that will bring you the financial rewards you desire are you, your personal drive, determination and business acumen. Can you turn a proven system into a successful business?

We are always looking for driven, ambitious individuals to become Caremark franchisees, especially those who have identified for themselves that care is a growing sector. A report that was recently published by think tank IPPR states that the number of older people that will require care is soon set to outstrip the number of family members available to provide it(1). This surge in the need for care has been mirrored in the rapid growth in Caremark franchisees; since launching in 2005, Caremark has built a network of 74 domestic and 8 international offices. This nationwide network has been built upon the methodology which has been perfected by CEO Kevin Lewis, capitalising on his 25 years in the care industry.
