Opportunities for Domino's franchise owners to grow their single franchise into a multi-unit success
This month we look at the opportunities for business owners to grow their single franchise into a multi-unit success, and two Domino’s franchisees who have done this to great effect and are now branching out even further.
Many entrepreneurs enter a franchise system with a view to opening a number of stores. The franchise business model often makes this much easier to do than perhaps it would for someone running their own business started from scratch.
At Domino’s Pizza, some 60% of franchisees now own more than one store and 40% own at least three. Domino’s recognises that if a franchisee has made a success of running one store, then they are very well placed to do so on a multiple scale. This makes perfect business sense for both the franchisor and franchisee.
Domino’s actively encourages its franchisees to develop their businesses into multiple units and provides extensive support to help them achieve this, as Andy Hirst, head of franchise development at Domino’s, explains: “If a franchisee has proven skills operating one store, then it makes sense that they apply their experience to further units. We give extensive support to our franchisees that want to do this, such as helping them identify sites and secure planning permission, so expanding your business in a franchised system is really like doing so with stabilisers.”
Andy continues: “As a franchisor, it’s vital that we increase the number of stores we operate to guarantee our long term business success. But the quality of our national network is only as strong as our weakest franchisee. This is why we only allow franchisees with the highest standards to expand. Our thorough interview process ensures that only the best candidates with aspirations to franchise multiple stores join, and expand, within our system.”
Offering one of the best franchise opportunities available, Domino’s is the ideal proposition for anyone looking to start their own business. The company is showing strong growth, with like for like sales up by over 9.3%1. With over 560 stores in the UK and a goal of 1,000 by 2017, Domino’s is seeking new franchisees to open these additional stores. The cost to become a Domino’s franchise is around £260,000 and applicants will need access to around £100,000 of their own money. Every new franchisee is fully supported by Domino’s in their new venture with comprehensive management and franchise training, plus ongoing support from an experienced head office team and a network of successful franchisees who have already started their own businesses.
Pizza People
Domino’s Pizza franchisees Sean Geddes and Chris Forrester each own eight and three Domino’s stores in Scotland respectively. These two entrepreneurial franchisees have expanded through the Domino’s system to build their own pizza empires in Scotland. With these successful stores under their belts, Sean and Chris have now branched out into a completely new Domino’s venture to launch the company’s first ‘store on wheels’ mobile unit to grab a slice of the action at outdoor events.
The unit – which is believed to be the biggest mobile food unit in Britain at 11.5 metres long – weighs 14½ tonnes and contains everything from a typical Domino’s store including twin ovens and cold room on an articulated truck. It has been created to a bespoke specification to replicate the look and feel of a Domino’s store, from the pizza makeline right down to the customer counter. The unit has been designed to cater for pizza lovers across the country as they make the most of the summer weather at festivals and events.
Sean Geddes explains: “When I first joined Domino’s, it had always been my plan to own a number of stores. Having set up and made a success of my first store, Domino’s helped me to open a second, then a third and so on, to achieve the eight stores I own today. The company’s business model allowed me to expand and I felt well supported by them, which gave me extra confidence in opening my additional stores.”
Chris continues: “Domino’s actively encourages franchisees to grow and our new mobile unit is just another example of the company allowing us to develop our businesses further and achieve greater success. We have had fantastic support from Domino’s in developing our new venture and we can’t wait to hit the road!”
The mobile unit will appear at festivals and events across the UK this summer.
