Marugame Udon celebrates Reading opening
Marugame Udon’s newest launch is situated in Reading’s central shopping destination – The Oracle - to give residents and shoppers a taste of Japan’s favourite hand-made udon.
To celebrate the opening of its Reading kitchen, Marugame gave away 2,000 FREE bowls of udon to celebrate Grand Opening Week
Marugame Udon also brought a slice of Japanese culture to Reading with a Marugame Matsuri (Matsuri 祭り= Festival in Japanese) to celebrate the opening.
Diners at Marugame Udon can expect to be greeted with the open-style canteen where they will be in the centre of the hustle and bustle of the udon kitchen. The 5952 sq. ft restaurant features 148 covers, including new click-and-collect kiosks for those who would like to enjoy their udon on the go.
Marugame Udon has bundles of freshly made and budget-friendly Japanese dishes to suit all tastes. Step inside and choose your udon bowl over the counter, complete your meal with tempura and omusubi sides, then head to the ‘build your own’ condiment station with fresh chillies, ginger, and Japanese sauces to personalise your meal. Do not forget the unlimited soft drinks and soft serve on offer either!
The menu at Marugame Udon features over 20 dishes that are under £5, including udon bowls, tempura, omusubi rice balls, and delicious desserts like dorayaki pancakes and unlimited soft serve ice cream. Guests can tuck into main dishes such as a hearty bowl of hand-made udon noodles or curry and rice and pair them with a side of light and crispy tempura often for less than a tenner! Simply pick up a tray and place your order at the counter.
All of Marugame’s udon noodles are made fresh in-house throughout the day, using three simple ingredients wheat, salt and water, a traditional recipe which creates a chewier ‘mochi mochi’ texture of the Sanuki style thick udon noodle. The simplest way to enjoy Marugame’s fresh noodles costs just £3.45 for Kamaage - udon straight from the Kama (pot) served in Kama water with sweet and smoky BK fish dashi for dipping.
Kouhei Honkawa, Marugame Udon Europe Head of Quality said: “We’re so excited to have opened our kitchen in the heart of Reading. We’re looking forward to bringing our value casual dining concept to the city as we carry on our mission to introduce udon to more people across the UK. The Oracle is a buzzing and lively place for visitors and residents of Reading, making it the perfect place to open our newest site.”
Marugame Udon made its UK and European debut in London in 2021 with its flagship site off Liverpool Street, followed by nine successful openings, The O2, Canary Wharf, St Christopher’s Place, Brent Cross, Oxford Circus, Bromley, Waterloo and High Street Kensington, and The Strand. Marugame Udon’s new Reading restaurant will be its eleventh in the UK, continuing its mission to introduce udon to all.
