Before entering the world of franchising, the journey for Martin Rolfe, Card Connection’s longest serving franchisee of 33 years, began with a convenience store—a venture that offered valuable insights into running a business. However, the desire for a change of direction led to an unexpected inspiration. When the card merchandiser visited to stock greeting cards, the idea of a franchise business seemed intriguing. It sparked an exploration into the world of franchises, leading to the discovery of Card Connection. After careful research and consideration, Martin made the decision to step into this promising opportunity.
At the time, the Card Connection franchise was in its infancy, having been established only a year prior. This presented a unique chance to grow within a new territory and lay the groundwork for success. With unwavering support from the head office, the franchise expanded steadily by building new accounts and fostering relationships.
The franchise model provided the perfect balance of independence and support. Being one's own boss while benefiting from the backing of a national company offered the best of both worlds. The alignment with Card Connection's products and operations made it an ideal match, establishing a strong foundation for long-term success.
The franchise journey has spanned an impressive 33 years. Financing the venture required a business loan, which was instrumental in starting this new chapter. Initial training from the head office paved the way, and ongoing support from Regional Sales Managers ensured continual growth and development.
Day-to-day responsibilities as a franchisee involve organizing outlets for merchandising and managing the associated paperwork. This blend of operational planning and administrative work forms the backbone of the business. The flexibility of being self-employed has brought significant lifestyle benefits. It allows for tailored workloads, the freedom to plan holidays, and the ability to manage time effectively.
Work-life balance is achieved through diligent organization—working hard during the week to reserve evenings and weekends for personal time. Employing part-time staff has also played a vital role. Proper training, flexibility, recognition, and bonuses for achievements, such as upselling or securing new accounts, contribute to high morale and team success.
Beyond business, community involvement has been a significant focus. For over 20 years, volunteering at Theatre Royal Norwich as a steward and front-of-house support has been a fulfilling way to give back.
Reflecting on the franchise journey reveals valuable lessons. Hard work leads to rewards, and belief in the product is crucial for success. The support from the franchisor enhances the experience, creating a rewarding and sustainable business.
Once the business has sold, I am looking to retire so that I can travel more which is another great passion of mine.
